Let’s Talk Vaping

100 vapes confiscated

Let’s talk vaping. Smokeless doesn’t mean harmless. E-cig usage by high school students rose 78% between 2017 and 2018. That’s close to double the kids exposed to nicotine in a single year. The flavors make it easy to hit. The devices make it easy to hide. The nicotine makes it hard to quit. From 2018-2019, in our service area alone, our deputies confiscated approximately 100 vapes per school.

Take the time to talk to your kids about the dangers of vaping:

Listen – Good talks start with listening.

Many Talks vs One Big One - Have an ongoing dialog rather than a single talk. The temptation to vape is not a one-time occurrence, so the conversation shouldn’t be either.

Talk Science - Kids should know that nicotine alters their brains in the area responsible for attention and learning, making it harder for them to carry out tasks and stay focused on their work.

Be Supportive - Quitting is hard. Stay positive with your teens. Reward the incremental progress and accept the setbacks as part of the process.

Two in custody after drive-up ATM break-in

Broken CHASE ATM machine

Two suspects are in custody after stealing a commercial truck and burglarizing a drive-up ATM.

At about 3:40 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, deputies were dispatched to the 26000 block of Crown Valley Parkway in Mission Viejo after a caller reported two suspects breaking in to a drive-up ATM. The caller also told deputies the truck had a logo on the side.

Deputies contacted the owner of the company and learned the truck had been stolen out of San Clemente and that it was equipped with a tracking device.

They located the truck in Mission Viejo and attempted to pull the truck over, but the driver instead led deputies on a 20-minute pursuit. During the pursuit, the passenger fled the vehicle and was detained by deputies.

The driver continued the pursuit and, shortly after, crashed on the northbound 133 Toll Road at Irvine Boulevard.  The driver fled on foot up an embankment toward a nearby neighborhood.

Approximately three hours later, Irvine Police Department officers observed a man in a residential area matching the suspect description. They detained him until deputies arrived. He was later identified as the suspect who fled from the vehicle.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession or receiving of stolen property and evading police.

Sheriff’s Department participates in Operation Clear Track for Rail Safety Week

Orange County police vehicle waiting for a train to pass

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s OCTA Transit Police Services participated in a week-long campaign to remind pedestrians and cyclists to keep railroad tracks clear.

In recognition of Rail Safety Week September 22-28, OCSD posted up near the rail crossing at Red Hill and Edinger avenues in the city of Tustin for Operation Clear Track – the largest rail safety enforcement initiative in the country.

The event is intended to raise awareness about safety issues at railroad grade crossings and trespassing laws. Deputies passed out educational materials and offered tips to passersby on how to stay safe at railroad crossings.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Never walk, run, take photos or play on the railroad tracks. Not only is this unsafe, it is illegal. Railroad right-of-ways are private property and walking on them is considered trespassing.
  • Never try to outrun an approaching train. A moving train can take more than a mile to come to a complete stop.
  • Trains are quiet and sometimes hard to hear. Always stay alert when near the tracks.
  • Only cross the tracks at designated public crossings.
