The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s OCTA Transit Police Services participated in a week-long campaign to remind pedestrians and cyclists to keep railroad tracks clear.
In recognition of Rail Safety Week September 22-28, OCSD posted up near the rail crossing at Red Hill and Edinger avenues in the city of Tustin for Operation Clear Track – the largest rail safety enforcement initiative in the country.
The event is intended to raise awareness about safety issues at railroad grade crossings and trespassing laws. Deputies passed out educational materials and offered tips to passersby on how to stay safe at railroad crossings.
Here’s what you should know:
- Never walk, run, take photos or play on the railroad tracks. Not only is this unsafe, it is illegal. Railroad right-of-ways are private property and walking on them is considered trespassing.
- Never try to outrun an approaching train. A moving train can take more than a mile to come to a complete stop.
- Trains are quiet and sometimes hard to hear. Always stay alert when near the tracks.
- Only cross the tracks at designated public crossings.
