The duration of the background process varies on a case by case basis, however, most applicants can complete the process in 3-6 months.

No. The general hours of the academy are 0700-1600 with weekends and holidays off.

Yes. Currently the testing is the same as the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position. Once you have completed all the tests successfully, your background file will be reviewed by the administration. Your academy training is considered on a case by case basis and a determination will be made if any additional training is required.

There is no set amount of time for a deputy to be assigned to one of the correctional facilities. This is determined by the needs of the department. Promoting from Deputy I to Deputy II may lessen the amount of time spent in jail. The average time spent in the correctional facilities is currently averaging 4-5 years.

Promotion from Deputy I to Deputy II is based upon years of experience, performance evaluations and education. Each area is given a point scale and the combined score will be used in placement on the Deputy II promotion list.

No. You do not need to be a resident of Orange County to work for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. However, you do need to be a resident of the state of California.

Yes. The law requires a deputy to be a United States citizen. The Sheriff's Department will allow you to test for the position of deputy sheriff trainee while your application is being processed for citizenship, however, you will not be given a job offer until your citizenship is granted.

Yes. The county offers a tuition reimbursement of $10,000.00 per year.

Yes. While attending the Orange County Sheriff's Academy you will be paid Deputy Sheriff Trainee wages.
