Radio Dispatcher Trainee


  •  Radio Dispatcher Trainee: $ 25.78 - $34.75 hourly/ $53,622-$72,280 annually  
  •  Radio Dispatcher: $31.16-$42.01 hourly/ $64,812-$87,380 annually 

The Position

Radio Dispatchers and 911 Call takers handle more than half a million phone calls from the community we serve every year, which includes 13 contract cities and the county’s unincorporated areas. 

They are responsible for monitoring channels to dispatch patrol calls for service, obtaining resources and maintaining asset accountability. Dispatchers also provide radio coordination for specialty details including SWAT, the Aviation Support Bureau, Hazardous Devices Section, K9s, and Search and Rescue.

Examples of Duties

  • Responsible for receiving and processing 911 calls for emergency police, fire, and/or medical service needs, 24-hour 7/ day per week.
  • Dispatching calls for service, maintaining two-way radio communications with patrol deputies and investigative personnel and coordinating radio communications with allied agencies both within and outside Orange County.

  • $ 28.55 - $38.46 hourly/ $59,384-$79,997 annually 

This position is an integral part of Control One, the only county-wide interoperable communications center in California. Control One is the central point of contact for mutual aid between all law, fire, public works, and lifeguard agencies, as well as state and federal agencies.

Examples of Duties

  • Providing wants, warrants and driver’s license checks for all law enforcement agencies.
  • Utilizing the Reddinet system to determine hospital availability for mass casualty incidents and day-to-day patient intake for our fire and EMS (Emergency Medical Services) partners. 
  • Assist Orange County law enforcement coordination and provide both emergency and non-emergency county-wide broadcasts such as Amber Alerts and evacuation warnings.
