The Regional Traffic Bureau is located at the Aliso Viejo Sheriff’s Station. It is comprised of sworn and professional staff members including a Sergeant, Deputy Sheriffs, Investigative Assistants, Office Specialists, and a Staff Specialist. The Traffic Bureau provides specialized traffic enforcement, as well as traffic collision analysis, DUI enforcement, towing service contracts and the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) response for all areas within the Sheriff’s Departments jurisdiction. In addition to these tasks, the Traffic Bureau also administers the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) grants for DUI Checkpoints, Driver’s License Checkpoints, and roving DUI enforcement within all areas patrolled by the Sheriff’s Department. All deputies of the Traffic Bureau and MAIT are highly trained in handling all matters related to traffic. The Traffic Bureau personnel provide daily support to patrol personnel, provide updated training to Department personnel, review all traffic collision reports, and provide expert accident reconstruction services and testimony in criminal and civil collision cases.
The Traffic Bureau’s professional staff provides multifaceted clerical support to the unit. The staff conducts follow-up investigations on hit and run collisions, manages the Department tow service contract, administers the Traffic Violator Apprehensions Program (TVAP), provides monthly analyses to each contract city relating to traffic collisions, and governs the traffic grant projects by providing statistical reports through research and data analyses.
The Sergeant of the Traffic Bureau also supervises the Sheriff’s Department’s Auto Theft Detail. This Detail is comprised of 2 Investigators, an Investigative Assistant and an Office Specialist. The Detail is responsible for investigating all auto thefts, including embezzled vehicles or vehicles obtained fraudulently from within the Sheriff’s Departments jurisdictions.
